Protecting Your Curls When Colour Dyeing

We all love to mix up our hair colour from time to time but because of the chemicals often contained in hair dye’s our curls can suffer a range of issues from dryness, breakage and frizziness. When you add the effects of hair dye with the challenges that already exist with curly hair it can be a real balancing act to find the right products and techniques to help protect your hair. Here are a few ways you can ensure that you limit the damage to your curls from hair dyes.

Before dyeing your hair

  1. Engage in a restorative hair treatment

  2. Don’t wash your hair before you colour, the oils in your scalp can help limit irritation

  3. Opt for a semi-permanent colour instead of permanent. This does mean however the hair colour will not last as long

  4. If you want to dye your hair lighter (for example blonde) do so gradually to minimise damage

After dyeing your hair

  1. Try to avoid washing your hair for a couple of days after dyeing your curls so you don’t wash out any hair colour

  2. Regularly deep condition, try once a week

  3. Stock up on hair products that help add hydration to limit dryness. It might take some time to find what works for you since previous products you used before colouring might not work as effectively

  4. Like with dryness issues, it is important to find products for your curl type as colour dyeing can alter your curl pattern making previous products and styling routines less effective

  5. If you have dyed your curls blonde opt for a purple shampoo to avoid brassy colour tones
